Bonding With A Senior Pet
bonding-pet

Whether you bring home a senior dog or a senior cat, bonding is important to get off on the right paw!  First, go slowly.  Take your new family around and show her the new digs she will now call home.  Show her the spot she can call her own.  Introduce her to the other family members, but only immediate family.  Don't overwhelm the poor thing with too many people to meet.

Resist the urge to drag her around to show her off.  That can come later. Most senior dogs are amazingly adaptable, but the process of moving and trying to get to know you has probably worn the dog out.  So let it rest.  Cats may demand more distance in the early days, so let your senior feline have his space.  Don't push too much affection in the beginning.  Let your new family come to you, but definitely let him or her know you are there for them.

Use reassuring language such as I hope you love your new home because it's the last one you'll ever need.  We are a team until the end.  I love you so much already.  Increase your affection after the first week.  Check the internet because there really is a ton of information out there that you will find helpful.
